| WJTW SEEKS FLAGPOLE TO SURVIVE HURRICANES |
provider writes, "After suffering through both Hurricanes last year with the loss of our antenna each time, it became clear that we needed something stronger to keep our antenna up. After each storm last year, our Washingtonian Palm tree was uprooted and blown down. This forced us off the air at a time when we could have been of major benefit to the community. In addition, it required a crane to replant the tree."
As such, WJTW began looking for some other structure to hold our antenna and withstand the forces from Hurricane winds. However, the major problem is that the Town of Jupiter has an ordinance that forbids any poles over 50-feet if you are within 500-feet of a residential neighborhood. WJTW is approximately 250 feet from a residential neighborhood. The purpose of the ordinance is for aesthetic reasons, and while we believe aesthetics are important, we believe that the safety of our listeners is more important. And we believe that having a local radio station capable of broadcasting emergency information would be of tremendous value to our community.
Currently, we are working with the Town of Jupiter to get the ordinance changed. We feel that a flagpole is the best solution to the problem because a flagpole will survive up to 140 mph winds and having an large American Flag flying is, in our opinion, as aesthetically pleasing as a Washingtonian Palm. If you’d like to help us make our community safer during the Hurricane season, you can contact the Town of Jupiter at 561-746-5134 and ask the receptionist to leave a message for the Town Council members that you support WJTW’s flagpole.
